LITTLE, JOHN R., MASAI-URO GOTO, AND JOHN J. SPITZER. E$ect of ketones on metabolism of FFA by dog myocurdium and skeletal muscle in Go. Am. J. Physiol. 219(5): 1458-1463. 1970.-The uptake of P-hydroxybutyrate (p-OHB), acetoacetate (AcAc), and free fatty acids (FFA) by the myocardium and the thigh skeIeta1 muscle of mongrel dogs was measured under control conditions and during the infusion of Na dl-/3-hydroxybutyrate. Oxidation of FFA was also determined by continuously infusing palmitate-l -14C complexed to human albumin during each experiment and measuring the FFA-14C uptake and the CO2 and 14C02 production. Infusion of the exogenous ketone caused an elevation in the blood levels of both P-OHB and AcAc. A marked uptake of P-OHB and AcAc by myocardium and skeletal muscle was observed, and this was accompanied by a decrease in the rate of FFA uptake and oxidation by both tissues. The specific activity of FFA-14C was lower in the venous bXood from both tissues than in the arterial blood, indicating release of unlabeled FFA. A small but significant uptake of triglyceride-14C by both tissues was observed. Under the present experimental conditions ketones appeared to be the major substrate for the myocardium; if completely oxidized they could have accounted for 83y0 of the myocardial CO2 production.

Ursolic Acid Improve Skeletal Muscle Hypertrophy by Increasing of PAX7, Myod and Myogenin Expression and Satellite Cells Proliferation in Native Broiler Chickens

Ursolic acid (UA) is known as a naturally occurring triterpene pentacyclic compound in some medicinal herbs including savory that affects the skeletal muscle. In the current study, the effect of UA was evaluated on C2C12 cells and satellite cells (SCs) isolated from native broiler chicks. First in the in vitro experiment, the C2C12 cell line obtained from the Stem Cell Technology Research Cente...

Regulation by insulin of myocardial glucose and fatty acid metabolism in the conscious dog.

In vivo small doses of insulin inhibit lipolysis, lower plasma FFA, and stimulate glucose disposal. Lowering of plasma FFA, either in the absence of a change in insulin or during combined hyperglycemia and hyperinsulinemia, promotes glucose uptake by heart muscle in vivo. In the isolated perfused heart, large doses of insulin directly stimulate heart glucose uptake. To assess the effect of phys...

Effects of nonesterified fatty acid availability on tissue-specific glucose utilization in rats in vivo.

The pathophysiological significance of the glucose-fatty acid cycle in skeletal muscle in vivo is uncertain. We have examined the short term effects of increased availability of nonesterified FFA on tissue-specific glucose uptake and storage in rat tissues in vivo basally and during a hyperinsulinemic (150 mU/liter) euglycemic clamp. Circulating FFA were elevated to 2 mmol/liter (FFA 1) or 4 mm...
